Carey Simonson is an outstanding graduate student mentor. A Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, he has supervised over 50 graduate and postdoctoral students, many of whom have become leaders in both industrial and academic settings in Canada and around the globe.
Dr. Simonson’s mentoring philosophy is to nurture responsibility and independence through direct supervision, facilitated team work, and guided collaboration. “He has the unique ability of knowing exactly how much support a student needs to excel,” writes a former graduate, “while still allowing them to be challenged and discover on their own.” Often working in a team environment, Dr. Simonson promotes and models a climate of respect and collegiality among his graduate students. He strives to prepare students for careers in academia and industry by engaging in weekly discussion groups, in which graduate students share their research experiences while enhancing their public speaking skills.
