The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) is a registered charity and not-for-profit organization incorporated under Part II of the Canada Corporations Act. From its founding in 1962 to 2006, CAGS operated as a private association governed by an Executive Committee elected by the members. The first official CAGS By-Laws were approved by the Federal Minister of Industry in December 2006, and in 2014 the Association transitioned to its current status as a registered charity under the Canada Not for Profit Corporations Act.
