Call for Nominations

Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS)

Board of Directors

Fall 2023

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) is Canada’s national organization providing leadership, fostering community, and promoting collaboration to advance excellence in graduate education, research, and scholarship. CAGS’s vision is to be recognized as Canada’s leader in graduate education, policy, and practice to support development of individuals who, through their scholarship, research, innovation and practice, contribute to vibrant and flourishing societies in Canada and around the world.

CAGS is currently seeking nominations for three Directors. The positions are open to Deans, Associate/Assistant Deans, Post-doctoral Scholars or anyone with an interest and experience in graduate education.

Directors are expected to attend quarterly Board meetings, three of which are virtual and one in hybrid format in Ottawa. Directors are strongly encouraged to attend the Annual Conference held in person in early November. Expenses for travel to Ottawa, if attending the meeting in person, or the Annual Conference are the responsibility of the home institution. Directors are also expected to serve on one of CAGS’ Committees (Conference Planning, Finance & Audit, Governance & Nominating, or Awards & Prizes), which normally meet virtually three to four times per year.

We are seeking individuals with a passion for graduate education, knowledge of the graduate landscape in Canada, commitment to CAGS’ mission, and strong, collaborative leadership skills. CAGS encourages nominations from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated in the Canadian Human Rights Act including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.

Nominations from colleagues and self-nominations are both welcome. Nomination packages should include a CV and a Statement of Interest indicating:

1. How the nominee has interacted with CAGS (e.g. served on committees, attended conferences, participated in webinars, no interactions);

2. Why they wish to be on the Board;

3. What skills or attributes they would bring, especially in relation to those listed above.

Nominations should be submitted to Dr. Ian Wereley (Ian.Wereley@CAGS.ca) by the end of day on Friday, 29 September 2023. All nomination packages will be reviewed by the Governance & Nominating Committee, which will make a final recommendation to the CAGS Board of Directors.

Nominees will be notified of the outcome of their application following the CAGS Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 9 November 2023, when the slate of candidates will be presented to the membership for election.
