61st Annual CAGS Conference

Inclusive Excellence in Graduate Supervision and Mentorship

7-10 November 2023

Victoria, British Columbia
Delta Ocean Pointe Resort

In-person format with live-stream of main events

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) will host its 61st Annual Conference at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort in Victoria, British Columbia, from 7 to 10 November 2023. The title of this year’s conference is Inclusive Excellence in Graduate Supervision and Mentorship.

Today’s graduate students and postdoctoral scholars face enormous challenges, including financial and family stresses, job market uncertainty, housing precarity, and the increasing toll on their everyday mental health and wellness. More than ever before, graduate students and postdocs require high quality, inclusive, and compassionate supervision and mentorship as they work to achieve their educational and professional goals. Excellent supervisors and mentors encourage work-life balance, inspire their trainees to be creative in their thinking, to push their research in new directions, and to contribute positively to their communities and to Canadian society more broadly. They are essential to graduate student and postdoc success – in the classroom, the laboratory, and beyond. The 61st Annual CAGS Conference will explore and celebrate the highest standards in inclusive supervision and mentorship.

The CAGS Conference Planning Committee is currently accepting proposals for individual and group presentations. We invite submissions in English or French from deans, associate/assistant deans, directors, faculty members, administrators, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students from CAGS member institutions. Presentation topics should relate to the conference title – Inclusive Excellence in Graduate Supervision and Mentorship.

Proposals will be considered for the following formats:

In-Person

  • Single Presenter – Lightning Talk (1 speaker, 10-15 minutes)
  • Multiple Presenters – Lightning Talk (2-3 speakers, 30 minutes total)
  • Multiple Presenters – Panel Presentation (4-6 speakers, 90 minutes total)
  • Multiple Presenters – Roundtable (5-10 speakers, 90 minutes total)
  • Multiple Presenters – Workshop (90 minutes total)

Please note that all presenters will be responsible for covering the costs of their conference travel and accommodation if selected by the Conference Planning Committee. Accepted presenters will be granted a 10% discount on their conference registration fees. Conference registration fees include access to all events, presentations, and activities, as well as all meals and coffee breaks served during the conference.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is 4:00 PM (ET) on Wednesday, 31 May 2023. The conference committee will make its final decision by 14 June and will notify all applicants by email.
